Here’s just a thought (31)…

Events over the last two months may have caused us to reflect upon life. For example close at home for those of us fortunate to receive pensions, we will have noticed the effect of the world-wide economic crisis.

Much further away from Spain on November 4, Americans voted for a new President. The ecstatic atmosphere that accompanied the election of Senator Barak Obama, however, has since been tempered by the realisation that the new President will lead a country that faces enormous problems.

It is what happened on November 29 that should attract our attention. Each year the United Nations holds an International Day of solidarity with the Palistinian People. It is held on or near to November 29, the day in 1947 when the United Nations voted for the creation of a Jewish and an Arab state in Palestine. The Jews accepted the decision, but the Arabs rejected it.

We note the following:

• The former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan referred to as “a day of mourning and a day of grief”.
• The President of the UN General Assembly, Miguel d¨Escoto Brockmann of Nicaragua ( a Roman Catholic priest and at one time an official of the World Council of Churches) launched a scathing attack on Israel. He “accused Israel of apartheid and called for a campaign of boycott, divestment and sanctions against it.” (Ref: Eye on the UN, November, 25).
• As in the past years, only two flags were flown during this event – that of the United Nations and “Palestine”.

It is significant to note that the Resolution of November 1947 spoke of a two-state solution. Yet the flag of Israel is not flown!

In a year when the state of Israel commemorates 60 years of existence – a clear fulfilment of Bible prophecy and the developing purpose of God in the earth – it is ironic that the United Nations can only mourn!.
