| Banks
Most
banks are open from
9.00-14.00 Monday-Friday, and 9.00-13.00
on Saturdays. In tourist areas, most
banks have English-speaking staff and are
accustomed to handling international transfers.
Spanish banks
will charge you to receive money into your
Spanish bank account from overseas banks
and you should check the rate before moving
any substantial
sums.
This rate may be negotiable.
You will also be charged a fixed fee by
your UK
bank.
If you require
a significant sum for the purchase of a
property, then you may wish to investigate
using a specialist currency broker,
or fixing the exchange rate in advance with
your UK bank using a
“spot contract”.
Tourist
exchange rates for cash or travelers
cheques over the counter generally have
a less beneficial rate of exchange than
inter-bank transfer/exchange rates.
Make sure you
take your passport
or identity
card as this is nearly always required.
Credit/Debit/Cash
Cards
Nearly all
major
credit cards are accepted at major establishments,
shops,
restaurants
and hotels
throughout Spain, and the exchange rate
for transactions
can be favourable in comparison to tourist
exchange rates. You may however also be
asked to produce some identity
– such as your passport. Do not be
offended, this is quite normal.
ATM Machines
also accept most Credit
Card
and Cash
Card
withdrawals from your
UK bank
account, but you will be charged a fee per
withdrawal.
