An explosion on board the Spanish navy frigate "Extremadura" at 2.30am this morning has left two sailors dead and several soldiers injured. The explosion occurred in the boiler room down in the bowels of the ship, which is moored in the El Ferrol military shipyard to the north of the province of La Coruña.
According to navy sources, most of the crew were asleep in the upper decks and were evacuated without problems.
The "Extremudura" is one of five "Baleares" F-20 class frigates which are being phased out and replaced by the newer F-100 model. She was launched on the 21st November 1972, and is due to be decommissioned next Autumn.
