| After several days of high winds, all regions except the Canary Islands are still on alert following the death of a woman yesterday in Pozuelo del Rey (Madrid). In Zaragoza, one woman was seriously injured and seventeen others hurt by several falling trees, while one person was injured in Murcia when a metal door fell on top of him.
The most serious incident occurred at a dog's home in Pozuelo del Rey, where the lady owner was crushed underneath a metal cage.
All those injured in Zaragoza were attending a the traditional Cincomarzada festival in Tío Jorge park, where several healthy trees were uprooted at around 5pm (photo). Among those injured were the mayor, Juan Alberto Belloch and his deputy, Antonio Becerril.
Also in Zaragoza, the passengers of a train travelling from Madrid to Barcelona were held up for around five hours by a wind-related mechanical breakdown.
Winds of up to 119km an hour raked the Valencian Community yesterday and also appeared to be the root cause for a dramatic drop in temperature.
The winds uprooted several trees, resulting in a camping site in Altura in Castellon Province being evacuated.
The high winds were also blamed for a train coming off the rails in Albatera (Alicante), as a palm tree had been blown across the tracks and nothing could be done to avoid hitting it. Although there were about a hundred passengers on board the train at the time of the incident, no injuries were reported.
Some 15 hectares of forest were under threat of fire between the Alicante towns of Pego and Adsubia.
Several shows were cancelled as a result of the weather, but despite this, there were no problems of any sort at Alicante or Valencia airports, with Alicante being chosen as the emergency destination for an EasyJet flight that left London bound for Almeria and had to be diverted. |
