| With two first-round matches still remaining -against Tunisia (Monday, 19th, 9pm) and Saudi Arabia (Friday, 23rd, 4pm)- Spain have established themselves as firm favourites to win Group H after a 4-0 destruction of main group rivals Ukraine this afternoon in Leipzig. The goals were scored by Xabi Alonso, David Villa (2), and Fernando Torres. Ukraine were reduced to ten men shortly after the resumption after a foul by Vaschuk on Torres which resulted in a penalty. Re-live the action as it happened with our live commentary below:
4.38pm: Carlos Puyol creates Spain's fourth with a surging run after winning the ball in midfield to set up Fernando Torres, who powered a first-time shot into the top left corner of the net to give the keeper no chance.
4.33pm: Aragonés makes his third and final substitution with Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas replacing Liverpool's Luis Garcia.
4.25pm: Spain continue to dominate. Raúl has had a couple of good chances, but both were easily saved by the keeper. So far, Spain have had eight shots on goal while Ukraine have had just the one.
4.10pm: Aragonés replaces Villa with Raúl, and Xabi Alonso with David Abelda.
4.05pm: David Villa (photo) scores from the penalty spot after Fernando Torres was brought down in the area by Vaschuk, who has been sent off. Television replays suggest that the referee may have made a mistake.
3.45pm: At the half-time interval, Spain continue to lead by two goals to nil. Since the second goal went in, Spain have enjoyed the lion's share of possession and have created the better chances.
It is to be expected that as the second half progresses, Luis Aragonés's men will be able to cope better with the blistering afternoon heat than their opponents.
Ukraine's most potent weapon, Chelsea new-boy Andrei Schevchenko, has been starved of possession up front and seems to be struggling for pace following a lengthy lay-off with a knee injury.
Of concern is that Pablo Ibáñez seems to be having a bit of a nightmare in the heart of the Spanish defence, losing possession twice in quick succession as the half drew to a close though both mistakes went unpunished.
3.17pm: Spain take a two goal lead against Ukraine. The goals were scored by Liverpool's Xabi Alonso with a headed effort from a corner in the 13th minute, while the second came from a free-kick taken by Valencia striker, David Villa, four minutes later. |
