| According to lip-reading experts consulted by the Brazilian TV company Globo, Marco Materazzi called Zinedine Zidane's sister a "prostitute" twice, leading to the headbutt that saw the French captain sent off in the second period of extra-time, shortly before the penalty shootout.
On the 'Fantastico' programme last night, the experts insisted that, after tugging Zidane's shirt, he insulted his sister twice, prompting the Frenchman to take the law into his own hands. It was an ugly, disturbing way to end an illustrious career and a superb tournament, and one which left a sour taste in the mouth of football fans across the globe, especially after he snubbed the medal-giving ceremony.
Despite the incident, Zidane was named player of the tournament for his previous performances in a vote that took place before last night's final. |
