Mayor Francisco de la Torre announced that 2,000 routers and a number of signal-boosting aerial masts will be installed across the city, providing around 80% coverage within six months.
The total cost of the scheme, which is being implemented by the Fon España company, is less than €200,000.
Málaga will thus become the first wi-fi city in Spain, although the same facility is already available in Andorra.
Other switched on cities around the world include: the Dalai Lama City (Ladakh), Los Angeles and San Francisco.
