| A baby chimpanzee, the sex of which will be confirmed in around three months time when it separates from its mother, was born at Elche's Río Safari zoo on the 18th March. Its mother, Magni, was the first chimpanzee born at the zoo in 1992. The health of both is reported to be excellent.
A statement released by the zoo yesterday said that: "It is a matter of great pride for us at Río Safari to witness the reproduction of this fascinating animal, which is under serious threat in its natural habitat. We at Río Safari aim to contribute to the conservation of this species, and hope that the offspring of the offspring of the animals at the zoo will help save the species from imminent extinction." |
