| Judge Miguel Ángel Torres, who is handling the 'Caso Malaya' investigation into alleged property development-related corruption in Marbella, has drawn up a list of 86 defendants who will be prosecuted.
Singing star, Isabel Pantoja (second photo), who is the girlfriend of former mayor and one of the central figures in the case, Julián Muñoz (main photo, right), escapes the list, but will be prosecuted at a separate trial for money-laundering along with Muñoz's former wife, Maite Zaldívar (main photo, left), and one of their daughters.
In his 450 page report, Judge Torres also specifies the charges against each defendant and the quantity of bail required to keep them out of jail. In the case of former Urbanisation advisor, Juan Antonio Roca (third photo), he has been charged with a number of offences including: bribery, fraud, embezzlement of public funds, money-laundering, illegal possessions of arms, influence-trafficking, and prevarication. His bail has been set at one billion euros.
Around twenty former Town Hall officers have also been charged, including former mayor and mayoress, Julián Muñoz and Marisol Yagüe (fourth photo), and former municipal secretary, Leopoldo Barrantes, who have all been charged with bribery, prevarication, embezzlement and fraud.
Disgraced mayor gives up hunger strike By: thinkSPAIN Friday, May 11, 2007
The former mayor of Marbella, Julián Muñoz, who has been in custody following his arrest for his involvement in a massive property development-related corruption scandal last July, has ended a hunger strike he started six days ago. It seems that Muñoz, who is in Jaén jail, ate a macaroni supper last night after writing to advise prison authorities of his decision to end the protest he started on the 4th May.
His celebrity girlfriend, Isabel Pantoja, was arrested last week, but released after posting €90,000 euros bail. According to a report in yesterday's El Pais, Ms Pantoja, who denies charges of money-laundering, cannot justify payments of at least €1.2 million euros received since 2003.
The main photo shows the former mayor with his ex-wife, Maite Zaldívar, who is also implicated in the scandal.

Isabel Pantoja released on €90,000 euros bail By: thinkSPAIN Friday, May 4, 2007
Isabel Pantoja was released on bail of €90,000 euros yesterday afternoon by the judge in charge of the 'Malaya' corruption investigation, Miguel Ángel Torres.
After an intense three hour interrogation during which neither Ms Pantoja nor her legal team was unable to justify the purchase of livestock and a number of properties in Fuengirola, the singer was charged with laundering money obtained illegally in commission payments by her boyfriend, former Marbella mayor, Julián Muñoz, who has been in custody since last July.
Ms Pantoja had no problems finding the cash for her bail which was delivered in a leather bag by her chauffeur shortly before 7pm yesterday evening.
Ms Pantoja, who claims not to understand the charges levelled against her, is said to be "devastated" and "dazed" after yesterday's court hearing and spending Wednesday night in jail.
Isabel Pantoja arrested in Marbella corruption probe By: thinkSPAIN Thursday, May 3, 2007
Spanish singing star, Isabel Pantoja, spent the night in jail after being arrested at her Marbella home on the exclusive La Pera residential estate at around 11pm last night. Ms Pantoja, who is the girlfriend of former Marbella mayor Julián Muñoz, was arrested as part of the 'Malaya' investigation into property development-related corruption, fraud and money laundering. Mr Muñoz was arrested on the 19th July 2006 and has been locked up Jaén provincial jail since the 5th October.
During a raid on the singer's home last January, €9,500 euros in cash was seized, which the singer claimed belonged to her and was for "everyday household expenses." Also seized was more than fifty thousand US dollars in large denomination bills. At the time, Ms Pantoja said that this money was an advance payment for a concert she was scheduled to give in Miami, which was subsequently cancelled. Ms Pantoja claimed that the money did not belong to her and that the corresponding paperwork was with her financial advisor in Madrid. |
