| The Fecsa-Endesa company has been found guilty of starting a fire in 1998 that destroyed 18,000 hectares of woodland near the town of Aguilar de Segarra in central Cataluña.
A jury unanimously concluded that the fire was started as a result of a poorly-maintained electrical cable that was the responsibility of two men, who have not yet been sentenced. They are: Fecsa area manager, Agustín Manuel López, and Francesc Josep Arcs, who was in charge of maintenance.
Two youths originally accused of starting seven fires in the area during the same summer have now been exonerated for the Aguilar de Segarra blaze and two others, leaving only the four the pair admitted responsibility for. |
