KING Felipe VI's annual Christmas Eve speech once again included a covert appeal to secessionist politicians, as well as raising concerns about young adults' struggle to afford housing and violence against women.
Iran labels Aznar 'ignorant disciple of Franco'
22/06/2007
In response to comments made during a trip to Mexico by José María Aznar earlier this week, the Iranian embassy has issued a statement that describes the former Spanish president as a "disciple" of fascist dictator, Francisco Franco.
"Perhaps owing to his legendary ignorance," the statement reads, Mr Aznar, who reportedly defined the Iranian government as "authoritarian and corrupt" during a gala dinner in his honour at the headquarters of the conservative National Action party (PAN) last Monday, "is unaware that in the Islamic Republic of Iran, all the country's authorities are elected by universal sufferage."
The statement goes on to accuse Mr Aznar of participating in the "inhuman and illegal invasion of Iraq, where he contributed to its destruction and the slaughter of its innocent people."
The former leader of the Partido Popular is also accused of "celebrating the bombing of Libya by the Israeli government and the murder of defenceless Palestinians."
The Iranian ambassador, Mohammed Hassan Gadiri Abyaneh, also confirmed that he declined to accept an invitation to last Monday's dinner party, but sent a diplomatic representative in his place, who "walked out in protest at Mr Aznar López's slanderous lies."
