| According to a statement by the Canary Islands Astrophysics Institute, Queen guitarist, Brian May, will complete his thesis for Imperial College London on the formation of clouds of zodiacal dust based on observations made at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory.
May spent Monday and Tuesday of this week on Palma observing how interstellar dust particles reflect light from the sun, producing a spectrum visible when the sky is very dark and free from light contamination.
The observations were made using the Galileo National Telescope and will form part of May's doctoral thesis, his mentoring tutor for which is IAC astronomer, Garik Israelian (photo, left).
May embarked on his doctoral thesis 36 years ago, when he was allowed to use the Teide Observatory on Tenerife, but abandoned it to focus on his burgeoning musical career.
He was one of the guests invited to the inauguration of the Great Canaries Telescope (GTC) on the 13th July, which was presided over by the heir to the Spanish throne, Prince Felipe of Asturias. |
