| Recent blackouts in Benidorm have been blamed on the council not paying its electricity bill. Spokesman for the socialist party, Agustín Navarro, reveals that the local authority has an ‘immense debt’ with electricity board Iberdrola. The board has apparently threatened to cut off the town’s supply on numerous occasions as a result.
This, in Navarro’s opinion, explains why theme park Terra Mítica was left without power recently, in the height of the tourist season and at huge cost to the centre’s profits. Terra Mítica has recently bounced back from serious financial difficulties that left it in receivership and under threat of closure.
According to Navarro, a demand for back payments was received by the town council on August 6, threatening to cut off the supply of electricity in public areas if the debt was not paid.
Navarro says his party’s hands are tied and has asked the tax office for full details of Benidorm’s debt with Iberdrola.
He also commented that electricity cables in the town should be placed underground for safety reasons and to improve Benidorm’s image. |
