| A price check conducted by the consumer action group Facua reveals that some brand leaders are charging more for milk (€1.05 per litre) than the cost of a litre of diesel (€1.04).
The study shows that the average price of milk rose last month by 12.7% to €0.82, although Alcampo's own-brand El Pulgar costs just €0.57.
It was based on the price of sixteen brands of milk and conducted in three leading hypermarket and three leading supermarket chains.
Three brand leaders - Asturiana, Pascual and Puleva - are all charging €1.05 per litre with respective monthly rises of 21.3%, 12.9% and 10.9%.
Facua accuses the major branded milk suppliers and retailers of taking advantage of the world-wide rise in grain prices to increase their margins at the expense of the consumer as retail price inflation in no way reflects price increases achieved by dairy producers. |
