According to regional Telecommunications minister, Jordi Bosch, it is impossible to phone the 112 emergency services number in 20% of Cataluña's total surface area.

Despite this, Mr Bosch said that 99.8% of people living in urban areas enjoy mobile phone coverage, as do 94.5% of those living in rural areas.

Although Spanish law does not oblige mobile operators to provide 100% territorial coverage, Mr Bosch's department, aware of the importance some attach to knowing whether or not they will able to contact emergency services, has just launched a mobile phone coverage search engine on the ministry's website so that people can find out if they will be able to do so wherever they may be planning to go.
