| The Guardia Civil have arrested seven people this morning in connection with the investigation into alleged illegal abortions at three Barcelona clinics.
Three individuals, including the overall manager of the clinics, Carlos Morín (main photo), and his wife, María Luisa DS, were remanded without bail on the 30th November following their arrests four days previously in the first phase of the investigation.
Three doctors arrested at the same time were charged but freed after posting bail of between €2,000-4,000 euros.
It appears that the seven people arrested today are mostly medical staff, at least one of whom is accused of falsifying psychological reports justifying late-stage abortions on the grounds of protecting patients' mental health.
The investigation started after a documentary made by a Danish TV crew that was followed up by an official complaint made by the 'e-cristians' catholic association.
Six detained in illegal abortion clinic raids By: thinkSPAIN Tuesday, November 27, 2007
At least six people were arrested yesterday during raids on four clinics - TBC, Emece, Ginemedex and the Fundación Morín - in the Tres Torres district to the north of Barcelona city centre, that are suspected of carrying out abortions after the 30-week legal limit in Spain.
Included among the detained is the Peruvian director of the Ginemedex-TBC Group, Carlos Morín, who was arrested at the company's clinic on the calle Dalmases first thing yesterday morning, and taken away for questioning in an unmarked police car.
The company was investigated last summer by the regional health department, and, although no evidence of illegal abortion activity was found, it was fined €3,000 euros after various "administrative irregularities" were uncovered.
The current inquiry follows a complaint from the 'e-cristians' catholic association based on pretty conclusive evidence being shown on Spanish TV news this morning gathered independently by an undercover Danish TV documentary team and an investigative jounalist from The Daily Telegraph. |
