The worst drought in the last five years is taking its toll on the parched Aragón region, where irrigation bans are feared if no solution can be found before the summer season, though domestic supply is guaranteed.

Furthermore, there were three times as many forest fires last month than in January 2007 (29 vs 11), though the total area destroyed (26.44 hectares) was significantly higher than the barely 6 hectares lost over the same period last year.

Water levels in the region's reservoirs stand at 46% compared with 60% twelve months ago, and the region's irrigation farmers are calling for a "national catastrophe" to be declared.
