| According to the organisers, around 10,000 Post Office workers staged a protest march in Madrid yesterday to demand fairer pay and improved working conditions, although police estimate the total number at no more than 1,000.
The demonstrators marched from the Plaza de Cibeles to the Puerta del Sol behind a large banner with the slogan 'For a decent salary. Defending our future at Correos'.
Trade union spokesman José Sayagues told journalists that postal workers are "asphyxiated by their workload and low salaries while the company does nothing but increase its profits," and pointed out that while €950 million euros has been invested by the company over recent years, "it has forgotten about its workers."
A Correos worker can expect to take home no more than €900 euros a month though there is a variable €180 euro bonus which falls if sick leave is taken.
Mr Sayagues went on to bemoan management's unwillingness to discuss the workers' demands and is calling on the government to intervene on their behalf. |
