| Oroitz Aldekoa-Otalora and Agurne Salterain, who were arrested in Iurreta (Vizcaya) last Sunday for harbouring a known ETA terrorist at their home, have been released without bail by High Court judge Ismael Moreno.
During yesterday's preliminary court hearing, the couple, who are married, admitted that Gorka Lupiañez, whom they have known since their schooldays, stayed with them because he was experiencing family problems, but insisted that they knew nothing of his terrorist activities. Lupiañez was arrested by the Guardia Civil on December 7th.
Following the hearing, the couple's lawyer told reporters that his clients had tried unsuccessfully on several occasions to hand themselves in to the authorities after they were included on the Guardia Civil's most wanted list at the end of last month.
The pair have been charged with collaborating with a terrorist organisation and have had their passports confiscated.
Two more high-profile ETA suspects detained By: thinkSPAIN Monday, March 3, 2008
Two individuals included on the Guardia Civil's list of most-wanted ETA suspects for the first time last week, were arrested in Irrueta yesterday morning.
Oriotz Aldekoa-Otarola (second photo, top centre) and Agurne Salterain (bottom left) were unarmed and offered no resistance as they were detained after being spotted by surveillance officers leaving one of several properties linked to the pair.
Oroitz (28) and Salterain (27) are accused of harbouring fellow ETA activist Gorka Lupiañez, who was arrested on the 6th December.
Lupiañez had been staying in a flat in Abadiño (Vizcaya) owned by Oroitz and which was being used as an operations base by the terrorists, and which was searched four days after Lupiañez's arrest.
The country chalet where the couple were arrested yesterday belongs to the Oroitz family - they were taken back there yesterday evening to help in the search operation.
Guardia Civil add five suspects to ETA most-wanted list By: thinkSPAIN Tuesday, February 26, 2008
Photos of five more suspects have been added to the Guardia Civil website under the most-wanted ETA suspects section.
They are (photo, top to bottom, left to right): Aitzol Iriondo, Oroitz Aldekoa, Eidur Uruburu Zabaleta, Agurne Salterain and Jurden Martitegi.
The decision to publish their identities was based on the premise that they may belong to active terror cells poised to strike which outweighed fears that the move may force them deeper under cover.
Almost all have previous convictions for acts of 'kale borroka' street vandalism though Uruburu was sentenced to serve a year in jail in July 2005 for exalting terrorism at an illegal tribute to ETA activist Arkaitz Otazu, who died in a shoot-out with the Guardia Civil in Alto de Herrera (Álava). |
