| Nerea Garaizar San Martín (photo) was sentenced to serve ten years in jail at the High Court in Madrid yesterday for her part in a plot to assassinate former Franco minister and regional Galicia president Manuel Fraga.
Garaizar moved to Santiago de Compostela with fellow ETA terrorist, Alicia Sáez de la Cuesta, towards the end of 2000 and rented an apartment on the calle Castiñeiros from where they set about confirming intelligence gathered by other activists four years previously.
According to the judge's ruling, the information gathered - which included details of Mr Fraga's security arrangements and frequent church visits - was sufficiently complete for the planned car-bomb attack to be launched successfully.
However, the plan was foiled when De la Cuesta was arrested in March 2001. Garaizar then fled to France where she was arrested in December 2001 and subsequently convicted of belonging to a terrorist organisation. |
