| A 2-3kg rucksack bomb went off at 1am this morning outside the headquarters of the PSE-EE Basque socialist party in Derio (Vizcaya) causing some material damage though no one was injured.
An ETA representative called emergency services shortly before midnight to warn that two explosive devices had been left outside the Casa del Pueblo that houses the socialist party office.
This gave police sufficient time to confirm that a rucksack and a plastic bag had in fact been left in the doorway, evacuate nearby residential buildings and cordon off the area.
According to an Interior ministry spokesman, the blast destroyed a security blind and shattered all the windows of the first four floors of the Casa del Pueblo, which is located in the Plaza Árbol de Gernika (photo).
This is the second time ETA have struck since the start of the election campaign - the first being on February 23rd when they detonated a slightly larger device that damaged a TV transmitter station on Mount Arnotegi (426m) overlooking Bilbao. |
