| Guardia Civil officers have arrested twelve people in Madrid, Toledo and Salamanca as part of the biggest operation (codename 'Bambi') ever mounted against the illegal hunting trade.
The gang is accused of organising illegal hunts across Spain, including the Monfragüe National Park.
At a press conference in Madrid today, a Guardia Civil spokesman explained that 53 firearms - including rifles, shotguns and carbines - as well as 500 hunting trophies from endangered species such as: Hispanic goats, stags, wild boars, mouflons (a type of goat antelope), fallow deer, chamois, great bustards, owls and polecats, were seized during the operation.
Furthermore, illegal taxidermy businesses used by the detained were discovered in Toledo and Salamanca.
It seems that a number of the arrestees have previous convictions for similar offences dating back to the 1980s. |
