| A 36 year old mountain climber from Bilbao died yesterday as he and two companions were attempting to scale the Pico del Aspe (photo) in the Aragonese Pyrenees (near Aísa in Huesca province).
It seems that the man - Matías José SR - slipped on a steep, rocky slope and fell around 100 metres into a frozen pond.
During the rescue operation, one of the Guardia Civil divers sent in to recover the man's body started to display the first symptoms of hypothermia and had to be air-lifted to safety.
The body was finally recovered and taken to Jaca Hospital where an autopsy will be performed.
The man's two companions - José Manuel PB and Carlos LG, aged 37 and 36 respectively and also from Bilbao - escaped unhurt. |
