Van Nistelrooy out for six weeks after ankle op

Ruud van Nistelrooy could miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on his troublesome right ankle at a clinic in Amsterdam yesterday. The operation was performed by Dr Van Dijk, an expert in arthroscopic ankle surgery responsible for looking after the Dutch national squad.

It is a recurrence of an injury originally sustained in a domestic league game against Almería on February 2nd that sidelined him for Real's next game against Valladolid though he returned for the next three games before aggravating it again - during his last appearance against Getafe on February 24th.

While there seems no immediate danger of Holland missing out on his services at this summer's Euro 2008 finals, there are even optimistic hopes that the former Man Utd. ace may even be fit in time for the Barcelona 'Classic' on May 7th, especially if the title is at stake, as well as for Real's remaining league fixtures - away to Zaragoza, and Levante.
