| A report published yesterday by the Business and Society Foundation predicts that Spain will need at least 157,000 immigrant workers each year until 2020 to enable the economy to continue growing.
Immigrants currently account for 9.93% of the population, and, according to this report, have contributed half of Spain's total GDP growth for the last five years.
The need is being created by a number of factors, including an ageing native population and a declining birth rate - the total of 16-39 year olds will fall from 15.8 million in 2005 to just 11 million in 2020 while the number of 40-64 year olds will rise sharply to 17 million. |
