| A 22 year old man who killed two people and injured three others during an illegal drag-race through Zaragoza city centre in 2005, has been jailed for three years, must pay his victims and their families nearly a quarter of a milllion euros in compensation and has had his driving licence confiscated for six years.
The other driver, the first man's 21 year old cousin, has been jailed for 18 months and banned from driving for three years.
The incident occurred shortly before midnight on July 17th 2005 when the two men - driving a BMW and an Opel Astra - decided to race from the La Unión bridge over the Ebro river to the Alberto Maestro Centre.
Crash investigators estimate that the two cars were doing between 120-130km an hour - twice the permitted limit - when the Astra crashed through the central reservation and into the path of a third car - a Seat Ibiza - in which all five victims were travelling.
The two that died were a man (26) and a woman (28). The other three occupants are still suffering from the injuries sustained in the collision. |
