| A 14 year old girl died yesterday after being struck by a train on a level crossing in Sant Feliu de Llobregat (Barcelona), where a 50 year old man lost his life in similar circumstances just over a month ago, on March 12th.
It seems that, distracted by the music she was listening to on her mp3 player, and fiddling with her mobile phone, the victim failed to notice that the protective barriers had been lowered and the approaching train.
A RENFE spokesman said that the train driver, who is extremely upset, tried to brake, but was unable to prevent the fatal impact.
The residents of the town have been campaigning for many years for the level crossing to be replaced by an underground train tunnel running beneath the town centre, but, although the scheme was approved by the council in June 2006, construction work has not yet begun.
This is the last remaining level crossing in the whole of the Bajo Llobregat borough. |
