| The regional government of Cataluña had to pay shepherds a total of €6,640 euros last year in compensation for attacks on their flocks by brown bears.
In sixteen attacks, twenty sheep were killed and brown bears also devoured the corpses of a calf and a horse.
It is estimated that there are around twenty brown bears living in the Pyrenees, around twelve of which spend at least part of the year in Cataluña.
There are some autoctonous Pyrenean bears, which can normally be found in the northeast of Navarra and Huesca and across the border in the French Atlantic Pyrenees though there are also Slovenian brown bears and their descendants that were introduced to the area between 1996-2006. |
