| The price of rice in Spain has risen 6.62% over the last twelve months though producers warn that this could jump to around 30% given that prices internationally rose more than 40% last month alone.
This was fuelled by massive increases in the prices of Vietnamese (+50%) and Thai (+46%) rice, and the situation has led to some US retailers introducing rationing.
On the bright side, the UN Agriculutre and Food department is predicting that worldwide production will rise 1.8% this year to 650 million tonnes, which should help control the current inflationary trend.
Last year Spain produced a total of 737,600 tonnes of rice though the total area under cultivation fell 4% to 102,079 hectares.
By region, Andalucía led the way with 208,100 tonnes followed by Extremadura (199,900 tonnes), Cataluña (128,000 tonnes), Valencia (125,100 tonnes), Aragón (62,800 tonnes), Navarra (10,300 tonnes), and Murcia (3,200 tonnes). |
