A 35 year old man died yesterday after jumping into a canal near the town of El Pont de Suert (Lleida) to try and save his pet dog, which had fallen in moments before.

It seems that the victim, whose body was swept away by strong currents to the El Pont reservoir where it was eventually found, was from Benasque (Huesca).

Fire-fighters, regional police officers as well as a mountain rescue team - supported from the air by a helicopter - took part in the search operation.
