| Miguel Ángel Jiménez carded a hole-in-one on his way to his first PGA title at Wentworth yesterday. It came on the 5th hole, enabling Jiménez to finish 11 under for the tournament and force a tense play-off against England's Oliver Wilson, which the Spaniard went on to clinch with a birdie on the second hole.
It is Jiménez's second title of the season following his success at the Hong Kong Open last November, and not only leaves him at the top of the European Order of Merit, but also puts him firmly in the frame to win his third Ryder Cup cap next September.
The 44 year old from Málaga, who has now won fifteen titles, becomes the third oldest player to win the PGA Championship after Dai Rees, who was 46 when he won in 1959 and Arnold Palmer, who won the title at the age of 45 in 1975.
Afterwards, Jiménez said: "It is my 20th full season on the tour and this is a nice present. I have been playing at Wentworth for many years and I have been in contention a lot in recent years. I know how to play this golf course." |
