| Judge Fernando Grande Marlaska has ordered the mayoress of Hernani (Guipúzcoa), Marian Beitialarrangoitia (ANV), to remove a commemorative plaque and monolith from a children's park named after José Manuel Aritztimuņo, alias 'Pana', an ETA activist killed in a shootout with police more than 25 years ago.
Ms Beitialarrangoitia was also ordered to remove any other reference to the fallen terrorist from the town's streets on the premise that they constitute "a constant humiliation to the legitimate feelings, not only of the victims, but of all those citizens with solid democratic principles."
In her defence, the nationalist mayoress, who could be charged with extolling terrorism if she fails to comply, pointed out that the decision to honour 'Pana' was made by Hernani council before she even moved to the town - when she was just 14 years old.
