| If Town Hall estimates are to be believed, around 40,000 people flocked to Montjuïc castle yesterday to celebrate it being returned to the city by the Defence ministry in Madrid.
The castle, which will be converted into an International Peace Centre, is possibly best remembered as being the execution site for a group of anarchists during a proletariat uprising in 1897 as well as for prisoners-of-war from both sides at different stages of the Spanish Civil War.
In 1940, the president of Cataluña, Lluís Companys was executed there following his extradition to the Franco regime by the Nazis.
It is also planned to remove the existing military museum and replace it with a permanent peace exhibition. |
