| Enriqueta Rodríguez Figarredo, the maternal grandmother of Princess Letizia, died last night at the Gregorio Marañón Hospital in Madrid at the age of 89. Enriqueta was admitted on Saturday, and had been in intensive care.
As a result, Princess Letizia has cancelled her engagements for today, and will not be accompanying the rest of the royal family at the national sports prize-giving gala.
Last March, Enriqueta's 90 year old, former taxi-driver husband, Francisco Rocasolano, was treated at the same hospital for a heart problem.
When Francisco retired in 1991, the couple moved to Alicante, but returned to Madrid following the death of Letizia's younger sister, Erika Ortiz, who committed suicide on February 7th, 2007.
Enriqueta was great-grandmother to Letizia's daughters, the Infantas Leonor and Sofía, as well as to Erika's only daughter, Carla.
The archive photo was taken at Leonor's christening on January 14th, 2006. |
