A 40 year old Spanish fan died in Alcalá de Henares (Madrid) this morning towards the end of a long night celebrating Spain's Euro 2008 triumph.

The alarm was raised at around 6.30am by a council cleaner who spotted the victim - who was wearing shorts and a Spanish football shirt - lying face down in the Plaza de las Bernardas, bleeding profusely from a serious head wound.

Police believe that, after one or two drinks too many, the man passed out, banging his head on the base of a streetlamp as he fell.
