| King Juan Carlos vistited Adolfo Suárez at home yesterday to award him Spain's highest honour, the Chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece, just over a year after parliament approved the tribute in June 2007 coinciding with the 30th anniversary of Spain's first post-Franco democratic election, which was won by Mr Suárez's UCD party.
Tragically, Mr Suárez has been suffering with Alzheimer's Disease for a number of years, and his family doubts that he even recognised his old friend, Don Juan Carlos, with whom he had worked so closely to ensure Spain's smooth transition towards democracy.
"Physically, he's very well, as you can see," said Adolofo Junior, who took the attached photo in the gardens of the family home in Las Rozas (Madrid), adding: "He sometimes remembers things." |
