| Spain's 2006 Tour winner, Óscar Pereiro, spent last night in a hospital in Turin after crashing out of this year's race on the Col del Agnel descent (km 80) during yesterday's 15th stage.
In slippery conditions caused by light rain, the Galician rider crashed into the protective barrier, catapulting him down a steep slope though his fall was broken by the thick roadside vegetation.
At the start of the stage, the Caisse d'Epargne rider was lying in fifteenth place overall, 6 minutes, 1 second behind Australian race leader, Cadel Evans (Silence-Lotto).
Pereiro suffered a dislocated left humerus, which was also fractured, though initial fears that he had broken his collarbone and femur proved groundless. |
