| A 40 year old Portuguese man has been arrested in Extremadura by National Police officers after a 17th century bronze bell stolen in Galicia was found inside the boot of his grey Alfa Romeo.
Manufactured in 1669, the 120kg bell was stolen from the Santa María de Caranza Hermitage in the district of El Ferrol that bears its name, on May 22nd.
The man, who has been charged with crimes against Spain's historical heritage, was stopped as he was driving along the Avenida de Elvas in Badajoz.
Sources close to the investigation confirm that a number of other bells have been reported missing from churches in the El Ferrol area over the last few months. |
