The life of an elderly man who fell in Bilbao estuary has been saved by the prompt actions of two regional police officers escorting Basque socialist leader, Patxi López.

According to a regional Interior ministry source, the incident occurred at around midday today near the Teatro Arriaga.

After being pulled from the water by the officers, the man was taken to a local hospital.
