| The man accused of murdering Ousmane Kote on the marginal 200 Viviendas estate in Roquetas de Mar (Almería) was arrested yesterday lunchtime holed up at a remote finca surrounded by greenhouses in the La Cañada area on the outskirts of the provincial capital.
Juan José ON (26), alias 'Bollo' (bread roll), who is known to have links with several local drug-trafficking gangs, was seized by the Guardia Civil shortly after 2.30pm.
Kote, a 28-year-old Senegalese immigrant, was kicked in the head then stabbed at least once - allegedly by 'Bollo' - on the night of September 6th as he was trying to break up a skirmish between Gypsies and north African immigrants.
His murder sparked a wave of violent disturbances that continued for more than 48 hours, leaving seven people injured and resulting in the arrests of ten north Africans.
Several injured in second night of riots on Roquetas estate By: thinkSPAIN Monday, September 8, 2008
The fatal stabbing of a 28-year-old Senagalese man at around 9.45pm last Saturday night was the catalyst for two nights of serious disturbances on the '200 Viviendas' estate in Roquetas de Mar (Almería) involving rival gangs of north African immigrants and Spanish Gypsies.
Police are still looking for the man responsible, who fled after rioters set fire to his home.
Garbage containers were overturned then set fire to and emergency services personnel were stoned, forcing the deployment of riot police, who were finally able to impose an uneasy peace that lasted for most of Sunday.
The arrival of an ambulance to attend a man injured in an innocent fall at around 9.30pm yesterday evening, however, sparked a second wave of violence that continued until order was once again restored at around 2am this morning.
In total, eight rioters were arrested and several people were injured, including one Guardia Civil officer, who was hit on the head by a rock. |
