| An ETA car bomb attack on a military academy in Santoña last night has left one person dead and around eight others injured, including several passers-by.
The identity of the fatal victim has been confirmed as Luis Conde de la Cruz, a 46-year-old staff sergeant from Segovia, who was enjoying a few days' leave in this normally peaceful coastal town.
An army captain suffered serious, but not life-threatening, hip and leg injuries and was taken to Laredo Hospital.
Around half a dozen bystanders were treated at the scene.
A warning call from an ETA representative was made to the offices of the DYA traffic agency in San Sebastián around half an hour before the bomb went off - insufficient time to evacuate the building.
Fortunately, there were only around a dozen people staying at the academy, which doubles as a rest home for officers, as the new term does not start until the start of next month.
Defence and Interior ministers, Carme Chacón and Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, travelled to Cantabria this morning to visit the scene.
This attack follows two others on Saturday night/ Sunday morning in Vitoria and Ondarroa, the second of which left several people injured, including a number of innocent bystanders.
