| Guardia Civil environmental officers have been informed that there are thousands of dead fish on a stretch of the Tajo river close to Arrocampo reservoir, the waters of which are used to refrigerate the Almaraz nuclear plant.
The president of the Platform for Those Affected by the Almaraz Nuclear Plant, Máximo García, who was called in by a concerned local resident, confirmed that he noticed "much more foam than normal" when he visited the point where the reservoir water is discharged into the river.
Notwithstanding, a spokesman for the nuclear plant pointed out that the affected area is actually closer to Valdecañas reservoir, and that he had been informed by a contact at the local water board that the problem was probably caused by the natural shifting of the reservoir beds, which can release hydrogen sulfide.
While most of the dead fish are barbel, some carp have also been spotted as well as a small number of sun fish. |
