| Five residents of the Santa Rita I old people's home in Puerto de la Cruz (Tenerife) were taken to Bellevue Hospital yesterday afternoon affected by a major fire that broke out in the laundry room at around 4.30pm.
It seems that three were experiencing breathing difficulties caused by smoke inhalation while the other two were suffering from hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels) and hypotension (low blood pressure) respectively.
Including staff and residents, around 300 people were evacuated to the Santa Rita 2 facility around one kilometre away.
According to the organisation's website, the Santa Rita Foundation, which is run by Father Antonio Hernández, was set up to provide a home for elderly people living in deprived circumstances, or without a network of family or friends to care for them. |
