Former Mecano singer, Ana Torroja, and model-turned-actress, Esther Arroyo, were among seven people injured in a head-on collision on the N-340 freeway, roughly 10km from the town of Vejer de la Frontera (Cádiz), that occurred in heavy rain shortly after 9am this morning.

Ms Torroja escaped with a broken collarbone, and was taken to the Punta de Europa Hospital in Algeciras. Ms Arroyo suffered multiple lower leg fractures and has undergone surgery at Puerto Real University Hospital.

All four other occupants of the Chrysler Voyager the two stars were travelling in (photo) were also injured, as was the driver of the Ford Transit van it collided with.

It seems that, partly as a result of the slippy road conditions and partly due to excess speed, the van driver lost control of his vehicle, propelling him across the central reservation and into the path of oncoming traffic.

According to a report on Ana Rosa's Telecinco programme, the celebrities, their respective husbands and two other companions had been on their way to catch a flight to Bali.
