David Villa scored twice yesterday as Valencia thrashed Numancia 4-0, consigning the sorry Sorians to the bottom of the table as Sporting Gijón notched a first home win of the season against fellow relegation candidates, Osasuna, to give the recently-promoted Asturians a maximum six points from their last two games after a miserable return to the top flight.

With eight goals from just seven starts, Villa leads the race for the 'pichichi' top goalscorer award, though Samuel Eto'o, who scored the only goal of the game as Barcelona beat Athletic Bilbao away from home yesterday, is not far behind with six.

The victory keeps Pep Guardiola's men within three points of the leaders, and tied on points with arch rivals, Real Madrid, who beat Atlético in Saturday's big derby game.

An Adriano goal seven minutes after the interval was enough to move Sevilla up to second, now level on points on Villarreal, who were held to a goalless draw by Espanyol in Saturday's other early game.
