| Fernando Alonso has reached a deal with Renault whereby he will stay for two more years, but has the freedom to join any other team for the 2010 season. Team-mate Nelson Piquet has also been offered and accepted a one-year extension.
"We're delighted to confirm both Fernando and Nelson for next season," stated team director Flavio Briatore yesterday. "This gives ING Renault F1 two of the most exciting drivers around, and a perfect blend of youth and experience," he continued.
For his part, Fernando Alonso explained his reasons for staying, "I've decided to stay here because they were always my first choice, and I feel very happy and comfortable with them. It's a very united team with a competitive, winning mentality, but also a relaxed and welcoming attitude, which suits me perfectly."
With reference to last season, the former world champion had this to say, "After a difficult start, we overcame our problems, and consistently improved our results. My back-to-back victories in Singapore and Japan and my second place in Brazil show how competitive we can be. We've won championships in the past, and we've also come through some difficult times, but now we've decided to show that we can repeat that success over the coming seasons." |
