| Carlos Monsell, the manager of Pachá discotheque in Valencia, announced yesterday that, as a direct result of the rising tide of opposition to their plans to raffle off a breast augmentation operation at a special 'Homage to Womanhood' theme night on December 5th, the promotion has been called off.
The decision came after the Spanish Health ministry, the Valencia regional government and Valencia town council all vowed to take legal action yesterday to prevent the raffle from going ahead.
In a written statement, Mr Consell said: "We at Pachá Valencia would like to apologise to any public institutions, or private individuals, who may have been offended by the initiative, and to assure them that, at no stage, did we intend any disrespect."

Carlos Monsell, who manages the 'Pachá' discotheque in Valencia, is somewhat surprised by the controversy caused by his decision to raffle off a €4,500 euro breast augmentation operation at a 'Homage to womanhood' night on December 5th.
After all, the operation will be performed by a "prestigious" local surgeon, though Mr Consell was unwilling to confirm which, and an overnight stay at a private clinic is included in the package.
Also, the winner can choose to swap the breast implants for any kind of alternative plastic surgery such as botox injections or liposuction.
The idea for the promotion first appeared earlier this year in Argentina, where they sparked a storm of protest, leading them to be banned in certain provinces.
"We certainly didn't expect so much fuss. Society is a bit hypocritical, because this a reality that exists, and especially in Valencia. If I buy one for my girlfriend for Christmas, there's not a problem. If I go to the bank to get a loan for one, there's no problem," continued Mr Monsell, who went on to add ironically that, "we'll probably end up having to draw 20 numbers before we find someone who hasn't already had one." |
