| Two youths were arrested during an anitfascist march through Granada city centre last night to mark the 33rd anniversary of the death of Francisco Franco.
Eye-witnesses said that after one of the youths had shouted "you have no shame", they were chased by around half a dozen officers into a blind alley near the Plaza del Carmen when they were subdued and detained.
They were then allegedly held in a side street off the calle Mesones where their cries of pain attracted a small crowd of concerned passers-by and local residents, who were promptly moved on by the police.
During the demonstration, a number of garbage containers were overturned and set alight, antifascist slogans such as 'Granada will be the tomb of fascism' and 'No Nazis' were daubed on a number of public and private buildings on the calles San Juan de Dios and Gran Capitán, a police patrol car was daubed with red and yellow paint and rocks and missiles were thrown as the march descended into a running battle with riot police.
It began at 9.30pm in the Plaza de la Libertad following a meeting of the National Employment Confederation (CNT) that had been authorised by the local authorities. |
