|  Hundreds of curious locals flocked to La Barrosa beach in Chiclana de la Frontera yesterday to see a massive floating drydock that ran aground last Saturday night.
The 'Mar del Teide', which is 34.2m long and 20m high, came to rest on a sand bank roughly 50m from the shore after becoming detached from the tug boat that was towing it from Tenerife to Rota naval base.
A spokesman from the FCC company that owns the pontoon explained that they may have to wait for several days for the rough seas and high winds affecting the area to die down before any attempt can be made to refloat the structure.
However, it is feared that the salvage operation could take several weeks if any of the underwater buoyancy chambers have been compromised and need to be repaired. |
