Capdebera mayor, Bartomeu Alcina, has confirmed that two Spanish and two Moroccan workers died this morning when three storeys of the Son Moll hotel fell in on top of them. Four others were injured, two of whom seriously.
Mr Alcina also said that the Hoteles Serrano SL company that owns the hotel had been refused a renovation licence several times and had been ordered to stop work approximately six weeks ago.
One of the survivors told reporters that: "Two minutes before the collapse there were around thirty or forty of us inside. Thank God most of us got out."
For his part, José López, who is the Health and Safety secretary for the CCOO trade union for the Balearic Islands, said that the builders had been working "day and night" because the owners wanted "to finish before the spring," and described the way the reform was being carried out as "ridiculous."
